For the final year of this degree, the student must organise and complete a major project that focuses on a topic of personal interest. The chosen topic is the history and practice of witchcraft and how it exists in modern day society. This aims to answer the research question ‘How prevalent is witchcraft in today’s society?’ Research will be conducted by the student that will then be showcased in several blog posts, a showreel, a dissertation and four final images of make-up looks.

The make-up artist wanted to explore this area after finding some traditions and activities that are actually derived from witchcraft. For example, there is a widely known old wives’ tale that states you can tell the sex of an unborn child by tying the mother’s wedding ring to a string and hanging it over the mother’s stomach or left hand. If the ring moves on its own left to right or back to front in a straight line, the baby is a girl, and if it swings in a circle, it is a boy. (Knisley, 2020). This activity is a form of divination called pendulum dowsing, which can be read more about here. The student first experienced this at a young age when her aunt was pregnant and tried this method. It sparked a curiosity into finding out what other every day and popular activities come from this practice and to gain a deeper knowledge of the practice.

This blog will showcase the planning portion of the project, including designing, budgeting, sculpting and some trial and errors.
